Re: Flu treatment advice needed. In Arnold Schwarzenegger's book, "The Education of a Body Builder", he explains that your body won't get sick if it is already healthy, and by the time you some downwith something, you were already ill, and weak before you felt it, because you weren't doing everything you could to make yourself strong." He supports the use of alot of vitamines and exercise, and healthy eating. That way when an illness comes up, you won't be hit so hard because you are already strong. Recently my mother has been reading up on, and taking alot more vitamines, eating healthier and exercising. She has noticed that when she gets a cold, it only lasts a day, and is a very weak "bug". My suggestion is to counteract any illness prior to even getting it: Begin walking at 20 minute invervals several times a day. If you can't do this, begin with one 5 minute interval, work up to 20 minutes, and after that add another 20 minute interval. Eventually you should reach the goal of walking 5 20 minute intervals 5 days per week. You should reach 10,000 steps/day (5 miles)every day. You can wear a pedometer when you get up and count every step from walking into the bathroom in the am, to your stroll through the grocery store. It won't be so bad that way. Either way you do it, reach 10,000 steps most days. Second, cut out ALL your bad health habits: if you smoke, put yourself on a dosing "schedule" and decrease one dose at a time til you cut out smoking completely. Replace smoking with blowing childrens bubbles (the inhale/exhale that helps you relax), and light an aroma-therapy candle, the striking match is a trigger for you to relax as well, so replace it with a positive. Cut out all unhealthy foods, and eat only: LEAN CHICKEN OR FISH, PLAIN VEGETABLES THAT ARE VERY LOW CARB, AND ONLY LOW-GLYCEMIC CARBOHYDRATES, SUCH AS BARLEY (NOT THE "QUICK" TYPE), OR YELLOW LENTILS. Cut out 5 "food groups" - bad carbs, fat, sugar, salt and caffeine. Treat caffeine like smoking and put yourself on a dosing schedule, cut out one dose at a time, or mix the grounds with 3/4 caffeine, and 1/4 decaf the first week (or month), and slowly decrease the caffeine this way til you are off caffeine altogether. It stresses out your body, weakening it. If soda is your vice, buy both caff and decaf, and mix the cans til you have cut out caffeinated soda altogether. Begin a vitamine and mineral regemine, take a good multivitamine, calcium, fish oil pills, and minerals, maybe not in the vitamine. ADD IN HERBS that normally go in cooking, because herbs have been found to stave off hunger (cinnamon), burn fat (peppers), and do alot of other things, so reasearch the use of cooking herbs. STAY AWAY from health food store "natural" gimicks, as they can be dangerous. In other words, fortify your body when you are at peak health, and you wont fall into illness so hard when it hits you.
IF and when you do get ill, pre-purchase an illness "kit" - tylenol, broths, juices, jello, koolades, toast and crackers. Take a hot shower when you first feel you are getting ill, and go straight to bed. Stay for 3 days and watch tv. You will get well fast that way

Re: Flu treatment advice needed. I strongly suggest homeopathic remedies. For instance, Oscillococcinum is outstanding for relief of flu symptoms. Boiron is the manufacturer. It is available on most all natural remedy stores and even in some mainstream stores. NO SIDE EFFECTS!!
Also, if your version of the flu tends to come on very suddenly, I highly recommend have the homeopathic Rhus Toxicodendron on hand. The minute you notice a chill or rigor, take a couple of pellets. It should knock it out within 15 minutes. If symptoms appear to be returning later, take another dose. My person experience of doing this is that it knocked it out completely in 2 doses.....nevermore to return. :)
Usual complementary treatments are always relevant such as plenty of fluids including some juices. Anything that supports your body in general, rest and quiet, etc., is called for.

Re: Flu treatment advice needed. Don't drink anything that has acid in it. Peach necture can help with you not feeling sick. Also stale coke is good. As for the shot, it has been proven NOT TO GIVE YOU THE FLU. Water can make you more sicker. So you might want to sip a little at a time. Believe me I know what I am talking about. I has prone to getting the flu always. After five yrs. of getting the shot I have been very lucky not to be sick.

Re: Flu treatment advice needed. I cannot say if the flu shot really helps or not, but doctors insist that certain people definately have the shot, so it must do something, or I don't think they would do this.

Re: Flu treatment advice needed. The best advice that I can ever give is to have your pastor pray for you by laying on of hands. Prayer does work folks! More so than traditional medicine. Then, take your meds as the doctor ordered ie antibiotics if needed. I like herbs myself. I drink orange juice spiked with 7UP/Sprite/Lemon-lime soda diet if your diabetic, lots of soup chicken preferred, something for the fever so I can sleep, turn the phone off, listen to quiet music if needed, cuddle up with my favorite blanket, put socks on my feet to stay warm, then sleep. All one can do with the flu is rest and let the Lord help heal you, but you have to take some initiative by staying hydrated and keeping some soft food in the tummy unless of course you have stomach flu.

Re: Flu treatment advice needed. you may be wondering whether a good diet is helpful in preventing the flu ,It can't hurt ,Plenty of rest at least 8 hrs, every night , If you feel sick chances are you still are and don;t rush to get back to school or work because you can get another strain or re infected with the same one more then once , the flu shot is advised ! And always wash your hands and drinking bottled waters and juices are better then say, water from a fountain that others may have used and abused ( they not having washed there hands after sneezing for example then pressing the water fountain button would be a good way for them to have spread germs on to some one else, you perhaps)Good hand washing may sound obvious ,but many people forget this step and are just too busy to do it or think its not important even though it is extremely effective not only during the flu season , but always ! Bueno Suerte!

Re: Flu treatment advice needed. well, everything i take when i get the flu does knock me out. i find that its best just to take it as directed and drink fluids and eat soup.. anything warm to clear my nasal passages so i breathe easier... hot herbal tea, hot applesauce with cinnamon, and lemeonade served hot. i like to drink orange juice for the vitamin C... also i eat mashed potatoes and jello for comfort food... comfort food helps when you feel rotten like that. also if you have upset stomach, which i don't call the flu, but if you have it, drink 7 up and ginger ale... stuff that doesn't have cola in it, the dark cola flavoring isn't good for you when you are sick...thats not scientific, but there must be something to it because my Daddy always gave us 7up when we were sick as kids and it worked... we could drink that slowly when we could not hold anything else down... and if you feel up to it, have a little ice cream in there too.. the nutritional value is good... clear broth and crackers also helps and if nothing else, suck on a dill pickle...

Re: Flu treatment advice needed. Ahem, while drinking water is good you should try eating soup or something else that can be heated easily and doesn't really need to be chewed. Also, try drinking peppermint tea and taking menthol cough syrup and drops, they'll loosen up your nasal pathways and allow for breathing. Overall, you shouldn't stay in bed all the time, it'll make it worse, you should, unless you are really sick and not capable of movement, try getting up and walking around whatever room you happen to be in for about 5-10 mins. Drink plenty of water, juice and tea. I hope this'll help you somewhat.

Re: Flu treatment advice needed. Treating the flu symptoms is the only thing anyone can do. Plenty of fluids, i.e., clear liquids, No juice, I have found that flat 7up or gingerale helps the stomach tremendously. In addition, using pedialite pops is a cool way of soothing the throat and keeping the electrolites up. Tylenol every four to six hours but not to exceed 1,000 miligrams, it does affect the liver, (always check with your physician before using any medication). Plenty of rest, and within a couple of days you may feel stronger. However, the flu does sometimes take up to 10 days to get over depending on which type.
